Fossil Cove - 13th November 2010

Cliffs to the south of Fossil Cove, Tasmania - 13th November 2010 Cliffs at Fossil Cove.

This is a nice short walk between Blackmans Bay and Tinderbox. This is one of the walks identified by the Kingborough Council, and details can be found here. There's a rock arch and a rock platform absolutely crammed with fossils.

Do you know why "Tinderbox" is so named?

Not sure, tried looking. There is a "powder jetty" around the coast a way, and the end of the peninsula has the site of an old battery, intended, as I recall, to help repulse the Russians in the very early years of last century. Perhaps the powder was stored in the vicinity, rendering the place a bit of a "tinderbox".

I've also read, rather implausibly, that an actual tinderbox was lost here and then found again...

I will see what I can find out.

Thanks Mark. I did not mean to take up your time, but find old names interesting.

Just got an email from someone who reckons the Tinderbox name comes from a tinderbox that was found there, having been lost by an early French exploration party. Could end up being a cool explanation!
